Why is the US in Afghanistan?

Afghanistan is a primal country, bound by ancient tradition. theocratical rule, poverty, illiteracy and harsh terrain. Make no mistake about it, the puppet government of President Karsai, is just that. Some are now calling him the mayor of kabul as his influence wanes beyond the city and vast areas of the country are breeding grounds for lawlessness, corruption and terrorists.

Evidence seems to suggest that pre 911, President Bush had already determined to occupy this country, so the rhetoric about destroying the Taliban was in part true, but only because of oil.

So why do we attempt to change tribal. if not savage behavior in the name of protecting Americans from terrorists? What may have evolved to this stage, began as yet another indefensible occupation of a country, because of oil.

Now, I'm sure, given a thinktank, the pooled resources of journalists, experts on the region and politicians with a jingoistic notion on the necessity of an American presence in this beleagured primitve society, someone, has a broader perspective.I don't get it and that's' why I write these opinions, to become educated, hoping someone will give me some feedback.

Maybe I'm missing out on something. I wish someone would please help me understand this.I think I'm reasonably intelligent and can follow a clue or pattern of convincing argument, but I'm at a loss to see why American soldiers are dying in the name of a primal culture.

Yes, Afghanistan, given its geography, simplistic notion of God versus the infidel mentality, and its overall exclusion of secular rights is a virtual breeding ground for terrorist activity. So do we think we think we can control the Taliban, issue in a secular government?

Our new President,"Barack Obama" with all his gifts of leadership,
has yet to definethe long term obejective of US Troops in this war-torn region. I don't think any leadership in the US today wants to admit that both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars cannot be won.
